Mullen Organization of Beef
Mullen’s Beef in Schools Program is ready for another great year!
Mullen Public Schools have been serving locally sourced, donated beef in their cafeteria since December 2016. The idea has taken off like a shot and several more beeves and hogs have been donated since. Due to the initial success of meat donations to our school, a board was formed with the intent of seeing this become a lasting part of our community. The Mullen Organization for Beef (The MOB) is comprised of one school administrator, one food service employee, one school board member, and one producer member.
At this time, whole or half animals have been donated to the school by simply calling the office. From there, a butcher date is set at a USDA-inspected facility. We’ve been using Steak Master in Elwood, NE most consistently.
The butcher cuts the beef according to the school’s menu needs. Sometimes the producer donates the cost of the processing as well, other times the school pays for processing outright.
We are so thankful and encouraged by the success of the Beef in Schools program in Mullen Public Schools. With the incredible community support we’ve received, we’ve been able to feed our kids beef raised right here in the Sandhills. Feeding local beef and pork increases demand for beef and pork, educates our students about where their food comes from, and saves the school’s lunch program money.
We’re currently looking for animals to be donated for the 2024-25 school year. If you’re interested, give us a call at the school (308) 546-2223 and we’ll get you on a list and get a processing date on the calendar for you.
PLEASE Join us on October 17 for our annual cookout and fundraiser and support our football team as they play Bayard for the final regular season game.
