It's a day off from school, and while it's tempting to scroll for hours, today's a great time to pause and be mindful of your media use. National Honor Society encourages you to find some balance over this long weekend! Have a great weekend!

Mullen Elementary school is excited to share some wonderful news. Mullen Elementary School has been awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) grant for this school year!

This opportunity was made possible thanks to April Coetzee, our amazing School Food Authority (SFA) and head cook, who applied for the grant last spring. We were thrilled to learn just before school started that Mullen had been selected to receive the award.

Mullen is one of 167 Elementary schools across Nebraska chosen for this grant, which benefits approximately 51,000 elementary students statewide. Through the program, our students are offered a free fresh fruit or vegetable snack twice a week, served outside of breakfast and lunch, making it a fun and healthy addition to their day.

Our incredible kitchen team April Coetzee, Tammy Dancer, and Nancy Kerchal prepare the snacks every Tuesday and Thursday. After morning recess, Katie delivers them to each K–5 classroom. Many of you have probably already heard your children excitedly talk about “Katie’s snack,” as they call it, but don’t be fooled! All the credit truly goes to our dedicated kitchen staff. The kids love the surprise of discovering which fruit or veggie they'll get each week!

As part of the program, we’ve also incorporated bite-sized nutrition education activities into the classroom. These brief activities help students understand the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and encourage lifelong healthy habits.

We’re proud to be part of this program and thrilled to see our students both enjoying and learning from it!

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

MPS will be conducting a mock emergency drill in partnership with the local Emergency Management Systems on Saturday, October 4, 2025. This is a practice exercise only—there is no real emergency.

The purpose of the drill is to ensure that our students and staff are well-prepared and know the correct safety procedures in case of an actual emergency. This also provides an adequate training exercise for our local EMS services.

Second Graders Investigate the Mystery of the Koa Tree

The second-grade students recently explored the mystery of the koa tree, a unique tree that grows in only two places on Earth. Students built and tested seed models to see how structure affects the way seeds travel—by wind, water, or animals. The hands-on activity gave students the chance to think like scientists and discover how seeds disperse to new places.

Our first graders have been learning all about germination. To see it in action, we tried sprouting marigold seeds using a damp paper towel. We’re excited to report that a few have started to sprout and grow!
